The McMurry Summer Band Camps opened at 1 p.m. today, July 9, with registration of the Marching Percussion and Color Guard Camp and will continue through July 18.

“We are excited to report record numbers for both camps with our current enrollment at 95 for the percussion/guard camp and 160 for the band camp,” said Director Keith Lloyd.  “We expect these numbers to increase slightly on registration day.”

Registration is still open by going online to www.mcmbandcamps.com.

There are percussion clinics led by international marching percussion artists Bill Bachman and Jeff Queen this Thursday and Friday from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Bynum Band Hall.  The lead guard clinician is Celestino Sosa who is one of the leading guard instructors in the Southwest region.  The percussion and guard faculty include Stephen Versaevel (percussion, Montana State University), David McKnight (percussion, Abilene High School), Patrick Stevenson (percussion, Cooper High School), Jason Ott (percussion, Wylie High School), Chris Brannan (Director of Bands, Mann Middle School), Dean Webber (percussion, Canadian High School), Becky Mathis (guard, Cooper High School), Tabbatha Brooks (guard, Abilene High School), Sonia Saldana (guard, Lamesa High School), Patrick Cheney (guard, McMurry University and Fredericksburg High School).  The percussion/guard camp exhibition is Saturday, July 12 from 4-5 p.m. in Kimbrell Arena and is open to the public.

Band Camp registration begins Sunday, July 13, at 1 p.m. in the Bynum Band Hall.

“This is the first year we have expanded to three bands to serve the needs of the students and expanding enrollment,” said Lloyd. “Our Honor Band Director is Joey Ashbrook who is the Director of Bands at Central High School in San Angelo, Texas.  The Symphonic Band Director is Clay Johnson, Director of Bands at Cooper High School and the Concert Band Director is Jeannie Lunney, Director of Bands at Wylie Middle School.  Along with our three bands we offer a Drum Major training elective that is led by Brandon Robinson, Associate Director of Bands at Wake Forrest University.  The camp also offers chamber music electives that will showcase students performing in jazz band, percussion ensemble, woodwind quintet, brass quintet, clarinet ensemble, flute ensemble, trumpet ensemble, low brass ensemble, and saxophone ensemble.”

Additional electives offered at the camp include music theory, music appreciation, science of music, sight reading, conducting, and jazz improvisation.  Students also have social activities such as swim and gym, movie night, talent show, and the camp dance.

Faculty for the camp are Mark Wilcox, Frank Felice, Susie Rockett, Karla Ordonez, Pearl Owens, Ralph Zamarippa, Carroll Rhodes, Helen Wilcox, David Wallis, Wayne Keith, Maggie Missal, Marc Sanders, Stephen Versaevel, Chris Brannan, Jessica Watkins, and Kelli Porter.

“As always, the amazing McMurry band students are working hard to set up spaces, register students, and supervise students overnight so they have a safe and enjoyable camp,” said Lloyd.

Those McMurry students are Jarrod Light, Louie Fehl, Amity Mclaughlin, Rachel Hall, Jose Palacios, Kenny Mostert, Josh Mendoza, Karissa Means, Brantley Flemming, Dustin Jaramillo, and Jonathan Heilenmen.
