The McMurry Student Foundation has been invited to present at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education Affiliated Student Advancement Programs (CASE ASAP) District IV Conference next month. The conference will be held at the University of North Texas from February 6-8. The McMurry Student Foundation president, Shelby Wattenbarger ’15, and vice president, Sara Wickenheiser ’15, will be presenting about an event the group has facilitated each of the last three years called Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day.

CASE ASAP comprises student alumni associations, student foundations and similar organizations at more than 300 CASE member institutions across the globe. Its goal is to foster and enhance student involvement in all areas of advancement—from alumni relations and communications to fundraising, marketing and related areas.  This national organization created what has come to be called Student Engagement and Philanthropy Month, in which institutional members organize events and activities throughout the month of February to enhance awareness and engagement of students in higher education advancement.

The McMurry Student Foundation (MSF) is a board comprised of fifteen students at McMurry University who strive to instill a spirit of philanthropy which will in turn create the desire to increase the well-being of McMurry through charitable giving. Their goals are threefold; to increase fundraising to the university, to increase awareness among the student population about philanthropy; and to educate students about what it means to be an engaged alumnus. Each year on Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day the foundation asks students to show their appreciation for current donors by writing thank you notes or saying a few words on a thank you video. The foundation also arranges a student wide vote to determine where their fundraised dollars will be used to benefit campus and the student experience. Over the last two years, MSF has purchased bleachers for the intramurals field, contributed toward endowed scholarships, purchased new gym equipment for the Wellness Center, co-hosted an on campus movie night, and helped fund a student mission trip to Juarez, Mexico.

The opportunity to attend and present at the CASE ASAP District IV Conference is very exciting because the McMurry Student Foundation is being recognizing for the efforts they put into educating students about philanthropy. Ms. Wattenbarger and Ms. Wickenheiser are “looking forward to sharing our success with similar organizations at other universities and learning about what they do for Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day.”
