Rev. Jeff Lust, a 1983 McMurry alumnus and current provost of The New Mexico Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, has been appointed as University Chaplain and Director of Religious Life at McMurry University starting July 1, Presiding Bishop W. Earl Bledsoe announced today.

Lust will be responsible for spiritual growth and community development for the entire campus community; provide professional pastoral care and counseling for faculty, staff and students; oversee comprehensive religious life programming on campus in coordination with faculty, staff and student leaders; and help develop domestic and international mission opportunities and partnerships.

“We are excited to welcome Rev. Lust back to McMurry,” said McMurry President Dr. Sandra Harper “We believe that his many years of experience and his passion for partnerships and spirituality will greatly enhance McMurry’s mission.”

“I am very excited to be returning to McMurry.  It actually fulfills a dream for me to be a part of the campus community that was such a significant influence in shaping my life,” said Rev. Lust. “Rev. Tim Kennedy did an outstanding job as campus minister for many years, so I know that I am stepping into a ministry that already functions at a high level.  I am truly blessed to have this opportunity and look forward to working with Dr. Harper, faculty, staff, and students.”

While at McMurry, Rev. Lust was active in Makona men’s social club, serving as intramural director, vice president and president and a member of the McMurry Chanters concert choir. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. A native West Texan, Rev. Lust graduated from Littlefield High School in 1979.

As the New Mexico Conference provost, Rev. Lust provides leadership for congregational health and vitality, aligns the various boards and agencies and groups to better fulfill its mission, and serves as chief administrator of the Conference Office.

In addition to serving as provost and Albuquerque District Superintendent (2011-13) for the New Mexico Annual Conference, Rev. Lust has served as a senior pastor in both the New Mexico and Northwest Texas conferences, including St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church in Albuquerque (1997-2011), First United Methodist Church in Spearman, Texas (1993-97), and a dual appointment to Christ United Methodist in Levelland, Texas, and Sundown United Methodist Church (1991-1993).

He served as associate pastor at First United Methodist in Midland (1989-1991) and in youth pastorates while a student at McMurry at First United Methodist Church in Abilene, and San Jacinto United Methodist Church in Amarillo. Following graduation he was youth director at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Lubbock.

Rev. Lust earned a Master of Divinity degree in 1988 and a Master of Theology degree in 1989, both from Duke University Divinity School.  He has served on numerous conference boards and committees, including representing the New Mexico Conference at the 2008 and 2012 General/Jurisdictional conferences of the United Methodist Church. He has been a guest speaker at many church and civic events, including preaching at McMurry’s December baccalaureate service in 2007.
