For most competitive college bass teams, the bass team itself takes priority for the anglers, but for the McMurry War Hawk Bass Team, the priority is split between school, sports, and college fishing. As a team focused around the athletic department, McMurry University senior and War Hawk Bass Team President Sonny Morrow has to find ways for his club to stay competitive while working around the other members' time consuming athletic schedules.

"Competition is in our team's nature. Our team competes on the track, the basketball court, and the ballpark and we show the same passion and competitive nature on the water as well," said Morrow. "This year we have around eight members that are very active in the club and passionate about college fishing. We don’t get to go to a lot of tournaments throughout the year because we are all multi-sport athletes here."

Trying to focus on one sport to be great at is difficult in itself, but adding the bass team to the list is a challenge the War Hawk Bass Team welcomes with open arms.

Morrow stated that "Basketball players, baseball players, and track members make up the core of the bass team and though it is tough work around our schedules, the one weekend a month we do have off, we are hitting the lake!"

The McMurry Bass Team has planned their schedule out for the spring semester and plans to fish two of the Cabela’s Collegiate Bass Fishing Series events. As a small club with limited funds, they are very excited to be able to compete in such a large event close to home.

"The team is really looking forward to the Collegiate Bass Texas Shootout on Lake Texoma. This tournament is close to home and we feel very confident going into this tournament in that time of year," Morrow said. "And of course we cannot wait to get back to Florence, Alabama for the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship on Lake Pickwick. We learned a lot last year and we can't wait to get back on the water and do better this year!"

In between their school sports schedule, the club also plans on hosting a club fundraiser on Lake Ray Roberts this spring. After getting rescheduled in the fall semester due to bad weather, the club is looking forward to hosting the event and will be releasing the date soon.
