McMurry University will present the E. E. Hall Memorial Scholar Award to John Miller, Professor of Religion, on Thursday, April 23, at 11 a.m. in Old Main Building Room 206.

Dr. Miller will give a talk at the event summarizing some of his publications on the Dead Sea Scrolls and 1 Maccabees (a Hellenistic Jewish text found in the Old Testament Apocrypha).  He will also discuss his scholarship on dreams and visions in the literature of antiquity and offer a sample entitled, “The Function and Interpretation of Symbolic Dream-Visions.”

There will be light refreshments and the public is invited to attend.

Dr. Miller was named the recipient of the E. E. Hall Memorial Scholar Award for 2014 earlier this year for his distinguished record of research and publication in biblical studies. The award comes with a research stipend of $1,000

Dr. Miller, who also serves as Assistant Director of the Perkins ~ McMurry Satellite Course of Study Program for part-time United Methodist pastors, received his A.B. in classical languages from the University of California at Berkeley, and his M. Div. and Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from Princeton Theological Seminary.

His research focuses primarily on dreams and visions as a medium of revelation in antiquity, but also includes the study of the Septuagint and Jewish apocalyptic literature from the Hellenistic and imperial periods.

His most recent publications include the commentary notes for the text of 1 Maccabees in The CEB Study Bible, and an exploration of the Holy Spirit’s role in the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.  Dr. Miller is a certified candidate for ordination in the United Methodist Church.
