Abilene, TX

The McMurry University Wind Ensemble will join the Abilene Community Band for a special concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, at the Paramount Theater. This concert is free and open to the public.

The McMurry Wind Ensemble, under the direction of David Robinson, will feature guest soloist Mark Wilcox, Associate Professor of Trumpet at McMurry, on the Concerto for Trumpet by Alexander Arutiunian. The Wind Ensemble will also perform a rhapsody on the Irish reel “Highway to Limerick” by Nathan Daughtrey entitled Limerick Daydreams, as well as the classic Marche Militaire Francaise by Camille Saint-Saens.

The Abilene Community Band, under the direction of Joe Stephens, will feature alto saxophone soloist Leonard Pamplin on Sammy Nestico’s Persuasion and trumpeters Bob Johnson, Joe Cook, and Hannah Burke on Don Jacoby’s Carnival Variations for Band. The Community Band will also perform a lush arrangement of the hymn tune “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” by Jay Dawson before paying tribute to legendary composer George Gershwin with many of his favorite tunes in Gershwin by George.

The Wind Ensemble and Community Band will the combine on-stage for a patriotic finale to the concert.  Stevens will return to the stage to conduct “Battle Hymn of the Republic”, as set by Peter Wilhousky, and Robinson will return for “America, the Beautiful”, as arranged by Carmen Dragon.

This concert is a result of a celebration of the close working relationship between the Abilene Community Band and McMurry University, as both the Abilene Community Band and the McMurry Wind Ensemble rehearse in the newly remodeled Bynum Band Hall on the McMurry campus.  For more information, please contact David Robinson, McMurry Director of Bands, at 325-793-4867.
