McMurry University faculty and staff honored at the Spring 2015 Faculty Staff Appreciation Luncheon.

McMurry University faculty and staff were honored at the Spring 2015 Faculty Staff Appreciation Luncheon.

The Outstanding Faculty member is Joel Whittemore, who joined the McMurry communication faculty in 2001 as Instructor of Communication. He took over the responsibility as Director of Compliance for SACS- Southern Association of Colleges & Schools in 2010. He teaches Introduction to Communication, Argumentation Advocacy, and Ethics in the School of Arts & Letters. 

Over the years, he has served on numerous faculty committees – curriculum, instructional technology, graduate council – and served for four years as chair of his department.

He has a Bachelor of Science in Education from Northeastern University in Boston, and a Master of Arts in Communication from Abilene Christian University.

The Outstanding Staff member is Frank Owens, who joined the maintenance department in 2007 and serves as a maintenance technician.  He was selected for his diligence, dedication to the job and desire to complete the job correctly, according to nomination letters sent in his behalf.

The Outstanding Administrator is Lecia Hughes, Director of Human Resources and Title IX Coordinator, a position she has held since 2007. She came to McMurry in 1994 as director of counseling and career services. She served as Associate Dean of Student Life, McMurry University, from November 1997 to July 1999 and as Dean of Student Affairs from July 1999 to July 2006. She also taught as an adjunct in Business Communications, Ethics, & Freshman Seminar.

She has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing from Angelo State University and a Master of Education degree in Counseling & Human Development from Hardin-Simmons University.

Receiving an Exemplary Service Award this year were Lori Herrick, director of financial aid, and Michael Stephens, database manager and adjunct instructor.

Herrick ’99 joined McMurry in 2014 after a working in public accounting with Davis, Kinard & Co., a local accounting firm. She received her Bachelor of Business Administration from McMurry University with a concentration in Accounting & Finance and is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Fraud Examiner.

Stephens joined the McMurry staff in 2007 and serves as database manager and adjunct instructor. His responsibilities include implementation and management of university-wide administrative software system, administration and maintenance of departmental reporting and tracking databases, instruction of students in Database Management systems, and Help Desk duties. He also is an academic advisor to freshmen students and a sponsor of Eta Epsilon Iota Men’s Social Club.  

He has a Bachelor of Business Administration - Management Information Systems degree from Dallas Baptist University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Texas Tech University.
