McMurry Summer Theatre is producing The Traveling Lady, by Horton Foote. Set in the early 1950s, the play revolves around Georgette Thomas and her daughter who arrive in the small Texas town of Harrison to await the arrival of her husband, expected to be released from prison any day. She soon learns her husband, Henry, who continues to struggle with past demons, has been free for a month. Slim Murray, a local man with a past of his own, befriends Georgette and the little girl, attempting to help them in their present predicament.

We are introduced to a number of other citizens of Harrison, each with their own successes and failures. As with all of Foote’s work, at the root of the story are the basic elements of what it means to be human and the potential for redemption.

The play is being directed by Charlie Hukill and the cast includes David and Carolyn Ainsworth, Christina Wilson, Betty Hukill, Mary Glover, Charles Hughes, Anna Grace Sloan, Doug Jeter, Zoe Jeter, and Trey Spivey. McMurry alumus Lee Jones has returned to design the scenery and David Ainsworth is designing costumes.

Performances are July 30, 31, August 1, and August 6-8, in the Ryan Little Theatre, with a curtain time of 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children, with $2 off for McMurry faculty, staff, and students and can be purchased online, or by calling the box office at 793-3889 in the afternoon, beginning July 13.
