McMurry University Professors Dr. T.J. Boyle and Dr. Dana Lee are the recipients of KIVA Exes Association Faculty/Staff Development and Research Fund for this academic year.

The KIVA Award was established in 1991 by the KIVA Exes Association to help McMurry faculty and staff fund their research activities.

Dr. Lee’s research proposal is entitled “First molecular hypothesis for evolutionary relationships among subspecies of the Eastern mole (Scalopus aquaticus)”.  Students in her Molecular Biology Spring 2014 class began data collection for this project, but there is a need to increase the geographic sampling of moles to be able to make meaningful conclusions.

Funds from this fellowship will be used to purchase supplies to complete this project and allow Dr. Lee to work with undergraduates as they complete degree requirements of a senior capstone research project at McMurry University.  Results will likely be published in a scientific peer-reviewed journal such as Journal of Mammalogy or Southwestern Naturalist.

Dr. Boyle’s proposal is entitled “Macrobenthic Surveys of 12 Big Country Reservoirs.”  This project will establish a baseline data set for plankton, periphyton and macrobenthic organisms found in 12 local reservoirs.  This study may provide a valid protocol for state agencies like the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and Texas Parks and Wildlife to follow in their evaluation of Texas reservoirs. To date, there is not an accepted protocol to establish the biological integrity of a reservoir here in Texas.  The research study will change that.

The local project will provide an opportunity for Dr. Boyle to involve students in his research as well as advance his professional development.  The ultimate result of this project will be publications in a peer reviewed journal (Texas Journal of Science, Southwestern Naturalist, or the Occasional Papers of the Museum of Texas Tech University)
