The McMurry Percussion Ensemble will be performing a preview concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, February 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Bynum Band Hall highlighting the group’s performance at the Texas Music Educators Association conference in San Antonio. The concert is free and open to the public.

The ensemble also will perform at several high schools while in San Antonio. The group began preparing an ambitious program following its invitation last spring to perform at the country’s largest music conference, with an expected attendance of over 26,000 students and professionals.

The ensemble, directed by Dr. Joshua Knight will perform 30 minutes of music on Thursday, February 11, at 12:30 p.m. in CC Bridge Hall at Harry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.  The repertoire includes a world premiere performance of Zenith by Benjamin Finley, written for and dedicated to Dr. Knight and the ensemble.  Additionally, Dr. Finley will be on campus to work with the ensemble and record his piece for the publisher, Tapspace.

Other concert pieces include Fidget by Nathan Daughtrey, a high-energy octet published by C-Alan Publications, Nordic Peace by Tobias Brostrom, a poly-rhythmic and forceful quartet featuring senior percussionists, and Higuita! by Stephen Whibley, featuring area educators David McKnight, Jason Ott, and Patrick Stevenson.
