McMurry University is pleased to announce it has exceeded its goal of $250,000 needed to establish the Dr. W. Norton Jones Endowed Professorship in Chemistry, the first fully funded endowed professorship in the sciences. The University has currently raised more than $260,000 toward the goal.

“We are happy to be able to honor the legacy of teaching, mentoring, and groundbreaking research conducted by Dr. Jones, his colleagues, and the many McMurry alumni who make a difference in their professions and the communities in which they live,” said McMurry University President Dr. Sandra Harper. “Dr. Jones dedicated his life to involving students in his research, training successive generations of scientists who are making their own marks in organic and inorganic chemistry, biochemistry and biosynthesis. His students have also gone on to careers as educators and research scientists with a number of nationally recognized companies.”

From 1948 to 1976 Dr. Norton Jones, a professor of chemistry and chair of the science division, was acknowledged as the decisive factor on a student getting into medical school. During his time Jones and the exceptionally strong science faculty, established for McMurry a reputation of excellence in the sciences and exemplary preparation for a career in the scientific professions. Faculty members awarded the W. Norton Jones Endowed Professorship will bring ongoing prestige to the University through research, mentoring, and published works.

His legacy is alive today as generations of McMurry graduates credit their careers to Dr. Norton Jones who was committed to preparing students for the rigors of graduate and professional schools.  Earning his endorsement, students knew that the coveted letter written by Dr. Jones would get them into some of the most prestigious schools in United States.

“McMurry Momentum - the university’s strategic plan aimed at its 100th anniversary in 2023 – calls for advancing academic excellence to enhance student success while recruiting, retaining, and rewarding highly qualified, diverse, and engaged faculty members, whose concern about student well-being and development is central to their personal educational missions,” said Dr. Harper. “The W. Norton Jones Endowed Professorship will allow McMurry University to accomplish these imperatives by reinforcing and rewarding the gifted teacher and exceptional researcher who makes significant contributions to his/her field of study. Income from this endowment will support highly competitive faculty scholarship to advance their academic discipline while improving teaching and learning outcomes for student success.”
