Abilene, TX

McMurry University will join with the Abilene ISD Fine Arts Department to cohost musician Karl Sievers on April 18-19 on the McMurry campus.

Sievers will teach lessons to high brass studio students, teach master classes to university and local AISD and Abilene students, and perform a joint recital with David Amlung, McMurry High Brass Professor. All events are free and open to the public.

Monday’s master class will be during the weekly high brass studio class time and will be primarily for McMurry brass students, as well as McMurry music students and AISD/Abilene musicians. Karl will talk about the music business and brass pedagogy and will also coach students from the McMurry High Brass Studio.

Tuesday’s master class will be co-taught by Sievers and David Amlung and will feature AISD and Abilene trumpet students who have advanced to the UIL State Solo & Ensemble contest in Austin to be held at the end of May. Students will perform their repertoire and be given one-on-one instruction with tips on how to improve their performance before competing in May.

Tuesday evening’s recital will be performed by Karl Sievers, David Amlung, and Marc Sanders and will feature a variety of music for solo trumpet. Music from Hubeau, Hummel, Barrett, Tartini, and Schumann will be performed.

Sievers has enjoyed a very busy career. He has played with the orchestras of Indianapolis, Indiana, Charlotte, North Carolina and Dayton, Ohio. He was principal trumpet in the Cincinnati Ballet and is presently principal trumpet with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and the University of Oklahoma Brass Quintet.

In addition, Sievers has a commercial and jazz resume that is quite vast. He has performed on live television for seven years, played literally thousands of recording sessions, and played lead trumpet for countless touring shows and headline acts. Teaching is Sievers’ passion. He currently enjoys the position of Professor of Trumpet at the School of Music at the University of Oklahoma.

“I am extremely excited to join with the Abilene ISD Fine Arts Department to co-host Karl Sievers here at McMurry University. I have known Karl since 1998, when I studied with him in high school in Ohio and later studied with Karl at the University of Oklahoma,” said Amlung. “Karl is one of the best trumpet pedagogues in the world and his musical experiences are very diverse. Karl regularly performs as an orchestral musician with the Oklahoma City and Norman (OK) Philharmonics, has a vast jazz background, and has recorded thousands of recording sessions. Our students at McMurry and AISD are in for a treat as they learn from one of the most well respected university professors in the country.”
