Novelist Maggie Mitchell will be McMurry University’s Knox-Bennett Writers Series guest speaker on April 21. Mitchell will discuss the craft of writing at 2:30 p.m. in the Jay-Rollins Library. She will read selections of her fiction at 7:30 p.m. in Old Main Matthews Auditorium. Both events are open and free to the public.

Mitchell’s first novel, Pretty Is, published last year by Henry Holt and Co., has received wide critical acclaim. Pretty Is tells the story of two young women who face what happened the summer they were twelve when a stranger abducted them.

The New York Times calls it a “stunning, multilayered debut,” and Publishers Weekly describes it as “both a skewering of America's JonBenet Ramsey-style fixation with little girls in peril and a fascinating glimpse at the intensity of female friendship.”

Copies of Pretty Is are available in the McMurry Bookstore.

Mitchell has also published many short stories, including It Would Be Different If, which has been anthologized in The Bedford Introduction to Literature. She teaches English and creative writing at the University of West Georgia.
