New Interim Dean Announced for Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing

Dr. Sheila Earline Garland has been named Interim Dean of the Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing beginning July 11, 2016. Dr. Garland currently is a consultant for the Office of Secretary of State, Georgia Board of Nursing.

Founded in 1979, Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing (PHSSN) is a consortium of Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University. PHSSN is the only intercollegiate program in the nation that serves two private universities and has become a model for other programs seeking to efficiently provide a high-quality professional program in nursing. 

““I am very pleased that Dr. Garland has agreed to join the Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing to serve as Interim Dean,” said McMurry University President Dr. Sandra Harper, board member of the Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing. “She will bring outstanding career experience to this position and will provide strong and effective leadership to our nursing program.”

Dr. Garland has extensive administrative experience in nursing education. She most recently served as Dean of Health Sciences at Georgia Perimeter College. Prior to that position, she served at The Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences as interim provost and chief academic officer, dean of academic and student affairs, and as associate dean for health sciences. She also served as dean and professor at Mountain State University School of Nursing.

Dr. Garland taught and was chair of the department of nursing at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff for five years and also served as a test development specialist for the National League of Nursing. She began her career as a registered nurse and nursing administrator from 1971-1995.

Dr. Garland received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science from Adelphi University and a doctor of education degree from Columbia University. She has served on the boards of the Georgia Association of Deans and Directors, The DeKalb Workforce Development Board, ACCESS Inc., Jefferson Comprehensive Care Systems Inc. and the Essentials for Nursing Success Advisory Board.
