Carlton '63 and Sally Villers '65 have been chosen as the 2016 Northwest Texas Annual Conference recipients of the McMurry University Cross & Flame Award.  They will be honored at the 9 a.m. service on Sunday, October 9, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Abilene.

Established in 2000 by the McMurry Alumni Association, this award is given to strengthen the relationship between McMurry University and the United Methodist Church by recognizing individuals for service to their churches and to the University.

“When we began the search for college, McMurry was the obvious choice for each of us,” shared the couple, “we were educated, not only in book learning … but also in how God was to be an integral part of our lives.”

The Villers have been very active members at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Abilene for 42 years. Sally created Aldersgate Alive, a Sunday-after-Easter local mission project when church members leave pews to serve others, and also served as Youth Director for six years. In addition, the couple has served on countless church committees including the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, Council on Ministries and Mission Task Force. They are also active in the Renewers’ Sunday School Class at Aldersgate. Outside of the church they have served as Lay Members to the Northwest Texas Annual Conference, Meals on Wheels drivers and in the Aldersgate UMC Mission Field at Bowie Elementary. Additionally, the Villers have participated in many Aldersgate mission trips, both domestic and internationally.

Carlton retired in 1997 from Mann Middle School in Abilene after a career as a coach and teacher. Sally retired from Abilene Cooper High School in 2006 after a career as a teacher.

Carlton and Sally actively promote and serve McMurry. As retirees, they also enjoy donating their time and resources to helping others.
