Distinguished Professor of History emeritus and McMurry University Historian Dr. Robert Sledge had an article published in the July 2017 issue of Gettysburg Magazine titled “First Shot, Not Shot, Last Shot: Sgt. Jim Gambrell at Gettysburg.”

Gambrell was a Confederate scout who claimed to have fired the first shot of the battle as a signal that he had encountered Federal troops. Later, he twice bluffed his way through Union lines without being shot, though he heard the click of muskets being cocked. And finally, he was probably the last Confederate soldier to escape across the Potomac after the battle, with Union rifle bullets plunking in the river beside him as he swam.
