McMurry University Homecoming 2017 set for Oct. 5-7

McMurry University’s Homecoming begins with an opening ceremony at 5 p.m. Thursday, October 5, 2017, at Wah Wahtaysee Park on the corner of South 14th and Sayles Boulevard.

The Friends of the Library Lecture Series at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Jay-Rollins Library presents McMurry History Professor Dr. Don Frazier speaking on Yankees in Texas: The Civil War Campaigns in the Lone Star State.

About 500 Abilene and area students and families are expected to visit Tipi Village on campus from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday as the men’s and women’s social clubs offer tours of their authentic Native American dwellings and teach visitors about the history and culture of different tribes. There will also be a special presentation featuring hawks by a local veterinarian and falconer.

Self-guided tours for families will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday in addition to the school visits in the morning. Winners of the most authentic presentations will be announced at halftime of the Homecoming football game against Bellhaven at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

A grand opening of the Gypsy Ted Gallery II in the Old Main Building will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. McMurry Honors and Coronation will be held at 8:30 p.m. Friday in Radford Auditorium, followed by the bonfire and pep rally at Wah Wahtaysee Park.

An exhibition “Cooper Cafeteria: A 3D Experience” by Homecoming alumni artist Eric Britt ’13 is on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, October 5-6, and from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, in the Amy Graves Ryan Gallery.
