McMurry to Honor Abilene Historian Jack North

McMurry University will hold a special reception at 6 p.m. Thursday, November 16, in the Jay-Rollins Library honoring McMurry alumnus Jack North ’65 and his wife Sandie in appreciation for their donation of an extensive slide collection on Abilene’s history. North is a foremost authority on Abilene’s history, has been a sought-after speaker on the subject for over 30 years, and has written several books.  McMurry University is the proud recipient of Jack’s priceless collection of over 4000 slides preserving Abilene’s history in pictures.

Born on November 17, 1943 in El Campo, Texas, North is a 1962 graduate of Abilene High School and earned his BBA from McMurry College in 1965.  A man of many interests and talents, he attended the University of Texas law school, was a commercial pilot, a licensed Texas real estate agent and insurance agent, and is a 1967 graduate of Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science.  Jack and his wife Sandie are owners of North’s Funeral Home, Abilene’s oldest family-owned funeral home.  Jack served as past president of the West Texas Funeral Director’s Association.

An active community leaders for many years, North has served as president of the Better Business Bureau and the Abilene Philharmonic Association, chairman of the Taylor County Board of Health and vice-chairman of the Abilene Regional Airport Board.  He served on the executive board of the Military Affairs Committee of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce.  He was honorary commander of the 28th Squadron at Dyess AFB for 29 years and served as chairman of the honorary commanders committee. The Norths are members of First Central Presbyterian Church. Jack and Sandie have a son, two daughters, and eight grandchildren.
