McMurry University is pleased to announce the establishment of an endowed scholarship that will benefit students attending the Walter F. and Virginia Johnson School of Business.

The Crowley-Lawrence Endowment established by Weldon ’57 and Pat ’58 Crowley, will honor longtime McMurry board member and Sweetwater business man Jere Lawrence ’54 and his wife Mildred ’55 and their family.

A special signing ceremony is planned for 10 am. Friday, February 16, in Carleton Chapel at the Garrison United Methodist Campus Center.

The Crowleys established the endowed scholarship to honor Jere Lawrence’s devoted commitment to McMurry, which he served from 1982 to 2010 as a member of the Board of Trustees. Lawrence was McMurry’s Distinguished Alumnus in 1993 and was awarded an honorary doctorate by McMurry in 2000.

“Jere was an astute businessman and a Christian gentleman, and he and Millie were focused on family in ways that Pat and I tried to follow,” said Weldon Crowley, who also has served as a board member from 2006 to 2015 at the encouragement of Lawrence.

Dr. Crowley received the McMurry Distinguished Alumnus award in 2016 and has been honored as a McMurry University Trustee Emeritus. Pat Crowley is also the daughter of former McMurry President Dr. Gordon Bennett.

The Crowley-Lawrence Endowment will be used to provide scholarships to recruit and retain students pursing a business degree in the Johnson School of Business who have financial need and high academic qualifications, according to the agreement.
