The 2018 McMurry New Music Project Recital will feature four world premieres of compositions by composers from the United States, Venezuela and Brazil on Monday, February 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Ryan Recital Hall at McMurry University.

Sponsored by McMurry’s Department of Music and created by assistant professor Dr. David Amlung and visiting assistant professor Dr. Juan Mendoza, the McMurry New Music Project seeks to engage the worldwide musical community in premiering new works and promoting projects to be added to the active repertoire.

Announced in October 2017, the 2018 McMurry New Music Project placed a call for scores in four categories: unaccompanied trumpet, mallet keyboard solo, multi percussion solo, and trumpet/percussion duo. Fifty-five submissions were received across the four categories and winners were selected to be featured on the 2018 McMurry New Music Project Recital. The winners included:

  • Echo by Robert Coe (USA)
  • Abstracción by José Alejandro García (Venezuela)
  • Composition for Nine Sounds by Gilberto dos Santos Agostinho Filho (Brazil)
  • Transformations by Sy Brandon (USA)

The McMurry University Department of Music envisions the New Music Project to be an annual event that will expand in future years to new instrumental and vocal categories. The Department of Music is dedicated to being on the forefront of musical innovation and supporting the development of new repertoire by established and emerging composers. We hope you will join us for the recital.
