McMurry University’s Knox-Bennett Guest Writers Series will welcome back to campus 2015 honors graduate Sonia Del Hierro for two events on Tuesday, March 6. At 2:30 p.m. in the Jay-Rollins Library, she will discuss the craft of writing and her studies in Chicana identity. At 7:30 p.m. in Ryan Recital Hall, she will read from her poetry.

Del Hierro graduated from the McMurry Honors Program in 2015. Since then, she has earned her M.A. in English from Iowa State, and is now a Doctoral Fellow in the English Department at Rice.

While at McMurry, Del Hierro wrote a collection of poems for her senior honors project. Through various graduate workshops and directed studies at Iowa State and Rice, she has continued to write and to study the craft of poetry. She has become particularly interested in her Chicana identity and the history of Chicana literature.

Each year the Knox-Bennett Writers Series brings a guest writer to the McMurry campus. The series was established in the 1990s to honor John Knox, a local writer and a professor of English at both ACU and McMurry; and Pat Bennett, who, after a long career writing for the Abilene Reporter-News, served on the English faculty at McMurry. Knox and Bennett were renowned for their support of young writers, and this writers’ series commemorates and continues that legacy.

Both events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Cole Thompson, professor of English, at
