The McMurry University Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Keith Lloyd, has been selected to perform a showcase concert for the TMEA (Texas Music Education Association) convention held each year in San Antonio. The performance is scheduled at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center on Thursday, February 14, from 3-3:45 p.m. In addition to the showcase, the ensemble will perform concerts at all of the Abilene high schools the week prior to the convention plus a concert at McMurry on Monday, February 11, at 6:00 p.m. in Radford Auditorium. Following the Abilene concerts, the ensemble will embark on a two-day tour with performances scheduled at Jim Ned, Fredericksburg, Blanco, and Dilley High Schools.

Performance repertoire includes: Ritual Music by David Skidmore – a forceful percussion quartet that utilizes marimba and a variety of percussion instruments; TRaInspOrt by Theodor Burkali – a virtuosic chamber piece scored for two percussionists and amplified bassoon; Cloud Forrest by Blake Tyson – features junior percussion major, Joey Gonzales, as a marimba soloist accompanied by a percussion quartet; Minuano by Lyle Mays and Pat Metheny – a large Latin jazz percussion ensemble featuring McMurry faculty, Mark Wilcox, on trumpet; Higuita! by Stephen Whibley – four players share one marimba in a fast-paced salsa-inspired style; Rochambeaux by Brian Mason – a large-ensemble, powerhouse composition that uses three marimbas, three vibraphones, timpani, bass, drum set, and percussion.

McMurry students performing in the group include Zach Conger (Abilene, Texas), Louie Fehl (Abilene, Texas), Joey Gonzales (Dilley, Texas), Joshua Howeth (Tuscola, Texas), Jarrod Light (Tuscola, Texas), Charles Lovell (Overland Park, Kansas), Vanessa Richardson (Hutto, Texas), and Jessica Watkins (Bowie, Texas). McMurry faculty involved in the tour are David Robinson – Director of Bands, Mark Wilcox – Division Chair, Staci Spring – Instructor of Bassoon, Kyle Bryan – Logistics, and Keith Lloyd – Assistant Director of Bands and Director of the McMurry University Percussion Ensemble. Jason Ott, Assistant Director of Bands and Percussion Coordinator at Wylie High School is also participating with the group.
