Abilene Texas – McMurry University senior education major Joy Hassett is the recipient of the Education Deans of Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (EDICUT) award for 2013. The award is given annually to an outstanding student in the McMurry University School of Education. EDICUT presents the annual award to selected students who exhibit excellence in leadership in the community and on campus.

Joy Hassett has long had a passion for teaching children. She educated all four of her daughters by homeschooling during pre-school and kindergarten before returning to school to pursue a degree in education. She and her husband Scott served for 12 years as children’s pastors in Southlake, Texas before moving to Abilene in 1997 to pastor Hope4 Life Foursquare Church. Soon after her youngest daughter began second grade, Joy returned to school to pursue an education degree and will complete her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education next fall.

Joy continues to teach children’s classes at church and leads the church’s endeavors in supporting the faculty and staff at Ward Elementary School. In addition to being a wife, mother, pastor, and student, Joy works in the Abilene Independent School District as a part-time substitute teacher. At McMurry, Joy has been named to the Dean’s List each semester and has maintained a 4.0 GPA. She is a member of the Association of Texas Educators (ATPE), Phi Theta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi. The McMurry University School of Education will host a reception for Joy in April.
