Six War Hawks Gain ASC Women’s Basketball Post-Season Honors

RICHARDSON, Texas – McMurry University sophomore forward Keshia Collins was named to the prestigious six-member All-American Southwest Conference Women’s Basketball Team for 2011-12, it was announced by the ASC office on Wednesday. In all, six McMurry players received post-season accolades in voting by the ASC coaches.

Collins, a native of Midland (Midland H.S.) became just the fifth different McMurry player to be named to the ASC All-Conference Team in school history, joining Ogonna Merritt (1999), Nicole Harlman (2002), Symbri Tuttle (2006, 07) and Tara Richardson (2006, 07, 08) for a total of seven awards previously. Richardson and Collins are the only McM players elected as sophomores.

Collins was also named first team All-ASC West Division, just the eighth time a War Hawk has achieved that status, as well.

Collins also repeated as the ASC West Division Defensive Player of the Year, after a stellar season on both ends of the court. She lead the ASC with 87 steals, to go along with her 25 blocked shots, 14.8 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game.

Junior forward M.J. Vickers from Albany (Albany H.S.) was named second team ASC West Division. Vickers was another standout for McM head coach Veronica Snow‘s team, grabbing an average of 6.7 rebounds per game, while scoring at a clip of 7.2 p.p.g. She was second only to Collins in three-point baskets made this season (26) and also contributed 48 steals.

A pair of War Hawks – senior center Celeste Belizario (Amarillo/Tascosa H.S.) and junior guard Rikeita Thomas (Homestead/Humble H.S.) – were both honorable mention ASC West. Belizario closed her college career by averaging 9.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, while Thomas checked in at 10.0 p.p.g. along with 66 assists and 41 steals in 27 games.

McMurry also had two of its freshmen – Bridget Dorn (Plano/Plano West H.S.) and Katlyn Tarbet (Vega/Vega H.S.) – selected to the ASC West Division All-Freshman Team. Dorn appeared in 26 games and Tarbet 25 during their inaugural collegiate campaigns.

The McMurry team finished the season with a 19-8 record and a second place finish in the ASC West. The War Hawks reached the ASC tournament semi-finals before bowing out at the hands of nationally-ranked Louisiana College.
