McMurry Accounting Students Honored at CPA Luncheon


Two McMurry University accounting students were recognized at the annual student recognition luncheon sponsored by the Abilene Chapter of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, on Wednesday, March 27, 2013.

Tonjaka Scott was announced as the recipient of the McMurry University Accounting Excellence Award. Tonjaka will graduate in May, 2013, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. She has been accepted into the Masters of Accounting program at Texas State University in San Marcos, where she will begin studies in the fall. She ultimately plans to sit for the CPA exam, and she is interested in a career in forensic Accounting.

Tonjaka is a participant in the University Honors Program at McMurry. She was a member of the War Hawks volleyball team, and she previously coached the Abilene Aces, a 14-and-under club volleyball team. She is a member of Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship Society. Tonjaka was selected by the faculty of the School of Business to serve as a member of the Business Student Advocates, a group of Business students chosen to represent the School of Business, based upon criteria such as: classroom performance; campus and community involvement; acceptance of responsibility; individual initiative; and ability to function as a member of a team. She is currently employed at the offices of Jerry Love, CPA, LLC. Tonjaka is a graduate of Converse Judson High School in San Antonio, Texas.

Kellie Kovar was named as the recipient of the Abilene Chapter TSCPA scholarship. Kellie was raised in California in a military family. She served in the United States Air Force for six years. While she was stationed at Dyess Air Force Base, her assignments included service as a mechanic and as a computer programmer. Kellie has been a student at McMurry for two years. In addition to her University studies, Kellie is employed as a night dispatcher at the Abilene Police Department, a position that she has held for five years.

She is interested in forensic accounting, and she ultimately plans to sit for the CPA exam.
