ABILENE, Texas –U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry will be the featured speaker at McMurry University’s 2014 Spring Commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10, in the Hunt Physical Education Center. McMurry will confer degrees on 180 seniors at the event.

   Rep. Thornberry is a lifelong resident of the 13th District he represents. His family has been ranching in the area since 1881 – a family business in which he remains actively involved.

   Born in Clarendon and raised on the family ranch in Donley County, Thornberry graduated from Clarendon High School before continuing his education at Texas Tech University. After obtaining a B.A. in history from Tech in 1980, he went on to the University of Texas Law School where he graduated in 1983. For the next several years, he worked in Washington, including serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs in the State Department under President Reagan.

     In 1989, Thornberry joined his brothers in the cattle business and practiced law in Amarillo. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994.

     Dr. Mark Waters will be the featured preacher at McMurry’s Baccalaureate service at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 9 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Dr. Mark Waters came to McMurry in 2000 as an adjunct professor and began full time duties in 2006. He serves as associate professor of servant leadership, associate professor of religion, and director of The Center for Global Leadership. This spring, he received the Faculty of the Year award at McMurry.
