The McMurry Chemistry Department hosted the second annual two-day seminar for students participating in summer research funded by the Welch Foundation. Thirteen students from McMurry and Abilene Christian University presented research conducted over the summer.

Dr. Edward Donnay said, “The presenting students gain experience talking about their research in a low stress environment. They develop confidence and the ability to put together an informative presentation suitable for a scientific audience.” It is also common that audience members provide helpful suggestions for new avenues of research or to overcome sticking points.

Topics covered in the two-day event included:

Synthesis of biodiesel
Hydroxamate groups used in enzyme inhibitors
Fluorescence chemical education
Polymers containing nanocomposite clay additives
Post recruitment regulation of transcription
Photodynamic chromium compounds
Interaction of three enzymes in the mevalonate pathway
