Former interim President M. Lynn Yearwood returns to campus to speak at McMurry University Fall Convocation on Tuesday, Sept. 3; Reception to honor Dr. and Mrs. John Russell to Follow


ABILENE, Texas – Retired healthcare executive Lynn Yearwood, a 1970 McMurry University graduate, will be the featured speaker for McMurry University’s Fall 2013 Opening Convocation at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 3, in Radford Auditorium. Convocation marks the ceremonial opening of the academic year.

Following the Fall Convocation, a student picnic will be held on the quad to honor Dr. and Mrs. John Russell. A public reception for the Russells will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Garrison Campus Center Mabee Room. Dr. Russell retired last May after 11 years of service to the University.

Ms. Yearwood ’70 returned to her alma mater this summer to lead McMurry University as interim president from June 1 to August 12, 2013.

She retired in 2005 from HealthLink, a subsidiary of WellPoint, having served as Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Information Technology. She worked previously in various management positions at General American Life Insurance Company and Great West Assurance Company. Her last assignment there was as Vice President of Operations, managing 10 offices and over 1000 employees nation-wide.

Prior to working in the health insurance industry, she taught a variety of language arts and communications classes (drama; gifted English; rhetoric; American and English Literature; debate; speech communications; and Title I for grades 9-12) for 16 years. She has been named Teacher of the Year for her district and has served as a presenter at conferences and meetings in the areas of Writing; Gifted Education; Time Management; Stress Management; and Communications. The last eight years of her teaching experience included the responsibilities of English Department Chair and Humanities Division Chair. She has also served as adjunct staff at Lewis and Clark Community College teaching writing classes.

She holds a Bachelor’s of Science from McMurry University ‘70 (English and Speech); a Master’s of Arts Southern Illinois University ’76 (Communications); and holds certification in Educational Administration. In addition she has completed course work at St. Louis University in Educational Leadership at the doctorate level.

Since her retirement she has been contributing to the St. Louis community through serving as a board member of multiple organizations and as a consultant to several local non-profit entities, primarily in the field of education. She was named Volunteer of the Year in 2012 for Social Venture Partners, an affiliate of the Regional Business Council of Greater St. Louis. She consults in the areas of Management Coaching; Team Building; Strategic Planning; Leadership Development; and Operational Effectiveness.

She is married to Darrell Yearwood, a former high school teacher and media center director who is also retired. They have one adult child, David, who makes his home in Portland, Maine with his wife, Parks
