ABILENE, Texas –Region I of Alpha Chi, the national college honor society, has endowed a convention presentation prize in the name of the late Dr. Bill Short, the McMurry University professor of languages who served several years as secretary-treasurer of the region before his death in 2009.

The Bill Short Prize in World Literature will be awarded every two years to the student who makes the best national convention presentation in this category. Dr. Short, who served as chair of the Modern Languages Department, taught French, German and Spanish during his 27-year career at McMurry. He also served as faculty sponsor of the Texas Upsilon chapter of Alpha Chi. His office as a regional secretary-treasurer also gave him a seat on the National Council, the society’s governing board.

The World Literature Prize is one of 26 fully endowed convention prize funds covering a wide range of academic fields. Alpha Chi accepts members from all academic disciplines, inducting no more than the top 10 percent of the junior and senior classes and graduate programs. Alpha Chi has a presence in almost every state, with some 300 active chapters and more than 11,000 new members annually. Region I covers West Texas, the Oklahoma Panhandle, and New Mexico.
