ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University will host two special events on Thursday, Nov. 3, to celebrate new construction efforts on campus.

The Barbara Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center, which has received several improvements over the last five years, will now receive a pavilion to include a locker room, office and restroom facility. Groundbreaking for the pavilion will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 and will recognize Barbara Seidel-Swagerty and friends and alumni supporters of the tennis program.

The Texas Bookstore, located in the Garrison Student Center, underwent a $200,000 renovation over the summer and will be celebrating its grand re-opening at 11 a.m. following the ground-breaking for the tennis pavilion.

The tennis pavilion will be built at the location of the current cinder block building between the two courts, and once construction is complete, the portable building that served as coaches’ offices will be removed. In addition, the pavilion was built for expansion to add meeting rooms and classrooms. According to Brad Poorman, Vice President of Information and Support Services, the tennis center pavilion construction will cost $350,000.

“Mark Hathorn is a fantastic tennis coach who doesn’t complain and has jumped some big hurdles to put a successful product on the court,” athletic director Ron Holmes said. “He deserves everything he’s getting and we’re excited for him and for the program.”

The Texas Bookstore renovations were completed over the summer. Thursday’s event will include a visit by the Abilene Chamber Redcoats, special sale prices on merchandise, and prize drawings including a Sharp 19″ LCD TV, a Bose sound dock for an Ipod, a Ipod Nano, textbook scholarships, and two $25 gift cards.
