McMurry University Community Supporting Mission Thanksgiving

ABILENE, TX — McMurry University is sponsoring a collection drive on campus for Mission Thanksgiving 2011.

Mission Thanksgiving, sponsored by Love and Care Ministries, is an annual, community-wide collection of food, clothing, and miscellaneous items needed to help needy and homeless persons throughout the year.

McMurry students, faculty and staff are donating men’s and women’s clothing, bottled water, non-perishable foods, personal hygiene items, sleeping bags, blankets, toys and other items to support the effort.

In Mission Thanksgiving 2010, eleven semi-trailers of goods were donated by the community, over $140,000 was raised, and 5,500 vehicles drove through Arrow Ford to donate in just one day. This is an incredible gift each year for the homeless and poor of Abilene. In spite of the overwhelming response, all donations collected for 2010 were distributed within 11 months.

Several events have already happened on the McMurry campus to support the collection drive. Clothing collections were taken at the “cross-town rivalry” volleyball and football games between McMurry and Hardin-Simmons University. The McMurry Religious Life council sponsored a “Superhero Costume Party” for which the price of admission was donation of a coat. McMurry Men’s and Women’s Interclubs are sponsoring a competition between social clubs to collect food and clothing.

Another campus clothing donation collection will be taken during Chapel on Nov.15. A collection trailer will be located on campus quad, open from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. daily from Nov. 15-18 and will be manned by students from student academic clubs on campus. Collection will kick off the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 15, in conjunction with the Chapel collection that day. This collection will continue through Friday, Nov. 18, and the trailer will be delivered to the community-wide Mission Thanksgiving collection at Arrow Ford that afternoon.
