ABILENE, Texas – Fans at Saturday’s McMurry University football contest against Mississippi College will witness a renovation announcement ceremony for the renovation of Wilford Moore Stadium.

The stadium is the home of McMurry football and the track and field programs, and the university’s Board of Trustees approved a $2.2 million renovation of the west-side facilities at the stadium.

Saturday’s renovation announcement ceremony at Wilford Moore Stadium comes on the heels of McMurry’s move to the NCAA Division II. Brad Poorman, vice president of information and support services, said that the timing of the reconstruction is merely a coincidence.

“The stadium needed renovation whether we stayed D3 or went D2,” said Poorman. “An architectural and engineering study on the facility was approved by our board for future expansion, but that study revealed critical needs that needed to be addressed.”

As a result of the study, the Board of Trustees met at Homecoming in October of 2011 and approved the project, which also included a $200K maintenance endowment for the facility for future upkeep. In addition, Wilford Moore Stadium’s seating will be improved on the west side, it will feature a new press box, new restrooms, new concession stands and an elevator leading to the press & suite area.

“Can you name something on campus that’s as iconic as the football field? While it was a fantastic facility, it’s seen better days, so I think people will be a lot more excited to come and see something fresh and new,” Holmes said of the renovation. “The re-building also parallels the efforts of Coach [Hal] Mumme and the job he’s done turning around the football program with an innovative brand of play.”

Seating on the west side of the stadium is said to increase from 1,300 to 1,650, which will expand the overall seating capacity of the stadium to 3,550. Wilford Moore Stadium was re-named in 2006 after the former McMurry head coach; previously the facility was named Indian Stadium. The women’s soccer program will play its home games at Wilford Moore Stadium beginning in 2012.
