Award Winning Student Written Play to Premier

No RoomThe McMurry Theatre Department will present the world premiere of a new play entitled No Room for a Picture on the Blank Wall, by senior Theatre student, David R. Remschel.

The play, directed by Charlie Hukill, is a moving, powerful play about a man falling victim to the ravages of Alzheimer’s. The playwright deftly weaves pathos with comedy as a pair of moving men arrives to “clean the upstairs” of Peter Bunther. Familiar objects such as photographs, kitchen appliances, and furnishings begin to disappear, until finally the walls themselves come down. It is a compelling examination of a subject that impacts all of us.

The play has been selected as one of two winners at the College/University level in the Texas Educational Theatre Association’s annual Playfest competition. This is the 13th time since 1999 that a McMurry student has been a winner in this competition and the second win for Remschel. His play, The Annie Chronicles, was last year’s winner. The play will also be performed in late January in Dallas at the annual TETA Theatrefest convention.

During the 2013 spring semester, David was enrolled in the Servant Leadership class and did volunteer work at Windcrest. He was also taking an Advanced Playwriting class and in a true interdisciplinary manner he was able to combine the knowledge gained in both courses. While the Theatre Department has championed new playwrights for many years, staging student written one acts during alternating springs, this is only the third time it has staged a full-length play written by a student.

The performances will be on November 14-16 and 21-23 at 7:30 in the Ryan Little Theatre. General admission is $10. There is a $3 discount for all seats on Thursday evening, and all McMurry students, faculty and staff receive a $5 discount for all performances. Please call the McMurry Theatre Box Office at 325-793-3889 for tickets.
