McMurry University senior Bradley Rowland has been selected to receive a Pfizer SOT Undergraduate Student Travel Award for the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Society of Toxicology (SOT) in Phoenix, AZ.

He will be participation in the Undergraduate Education Program Sunday, March 23, which will include special toxicology lectures, tips on graduate school admission, and an opportunity to meet with graduate program directors.

Rowland is currently working at the Texas Tech School of Pharmacy in Abilene with Dr. Irene La-Beck and applying to graduate schools with programs in biotech. He has helped to develop a digital algorithm to count blood vessels in whole tumor sections. Fresh frozen tumor sections were stained using antibody against CD31 (endothelial marker) and digital images were generated from the slides. These digital images were run through Aperio image software using the algorithm developed to count blood vessels. The variation between digital and manual counting of the blood vessels was less than 9% for each section.

The algorithm resulted in far more accurate results, more quickly, and at a reduced cost. Rowland completed each step of the project from sectioning, to algorithm development, to data analysis.

This research will be presented in poster form at the Society of Toxicology’s annual meeting.
