Big Country Master Naturalists Honor Dr. Clark Beasley with Memorial Gift to McMurry Fifth Grade Magnet Class

ABILENE, Texas – The Big Country chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist Program has honored the memory of Dr. Clark Beasley with a presentation of two special books about nature to the McMurry Fifth-Grade Math-Science Magnet class (McMagnets).

“We are so honored that the Big Country Naturalist Group chose to honor Dr. Beasley with a gift to the McMagnet class,” said Magnet Class teacher Mrs. Sharlyn Bammel.

The children’s books, written by award-winning author Cherie Foster Colburn, are Our Shadow Garden with illustrations from children at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and Bloomin’ Tales: Legends of Seven Favorite Texas Wildflowers with illustrations by Joy Fisher Hein.

Four members of the Big Country chapter, Judy Hetherington, Jan Carrington, Mary Haney and Jimmy Tripp, came to Mrs. Bammel’s class on Wednesday, Dec. 12, to present the books and visit with the students about the goals and purposes of the Texas Master Naturalist program, which began in 1998 as a joint effort between Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Texas AgriLife Extension Service (formerly Texas Cooperative Extension) to provide education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and areas within communities throughout the state. The program provides an opportunity for concerned adult citizens of all ages to learn about the natural environment and seek ways to better their communities.

Dr. Beasley, who retired in 2010 after 41 years of service to McMurry, died in June 2012. He was honored with an Outstanding Professor Award at McMurry University and advised numerous nurses, doctors, and dentists. Dr. Beasley was a world-recognized expert on tardigrades (water bears) and published many articles on the subject.
