Abilene, TX

McMurry sophomore art major and Color Guard member Hailee Jane Reeder spent a week at the Summer Spin Color Guard Camp instructing the beginner class on all aspects of flag, dance, and marching under the direction of former McMurry Color Guard and McMurry Guard Camp Director Heather Hyde ’09. Hyde now runs the Summer Spin Camp for Houston area schools.

Reeder’s group of 18 was the largest class, and many of them had never held a flag before coming to camp. Her students received excellent training, and ended the week with a new love of guard and of their fantastic instructor.

In total, the camp served over 50 students from Brazoswood HS, Brazosport HS, Sweeny HS, East Bernard HS, and Freeport Intermediate School. Students worked hard on skills in flag, dance, rifle, and performance, and Hailee got to work alongside seasoned instructors who were able to impart their knowledge and teaching styles to her over the course of the week.

Hailee came to McMurry from Fairfax County Public Schools where she was active in the color guard directed by Hyde. A Theta Chi alumna, Hyde was thrilled to be able to offer a position to Hailee at the Summer Spin Camp.

"Hailee is a phenomenal young lady, a skilled performer, and an even more skilled teacher. She was a joy to have as a student in Northern Virginia, and I am proud of the woman she has become. I envy the Abilene-area schools, because they have a class-act guard director in the making, and I have no doubt that she will revolutionize any program she becomes involved with,"  said Hyde.
