Abilene, TX

Abilene, Texas - September 30, 2014 - Donald Ray Taylor `56 has established a new endowment in memory of his wife Charline Taylor and their daughter Donna Taylor Rocha that will benefit the men’s basketball team at McMurry University.

After graduating from McMurry, Don was hired to coach and teach mathematics at Roosevelt ISD, in Lubbock, Texas.  After receiving a master’s degree Don moved into administration eventually becoming the Superintendent.  He retired from the Roosevelt ISD after 44 years and moved back to his hometown, Acova, Texas, where he takes care of his family home and attends as many local athletic events as he can, especially War Hawk games.

“You don’t know what a small town is until you have been to Avoca, Texas. My McMurry education gave me opportunities I had never dreamed of and I am thankful for that,” Don said when asked why he is creating this endowed fund.

As a former basketball player at McMurry University, Don is proud to support the men’s basketball team well into the future of the program. The entire men’s basketball team attended the endowment signing at McMurry University to show their appreciation for his generosity and presented him with a basketball signed by the team.

During a short presentation, Don told the team “You will always remember the guys in this room. Your experience at McMurry and your friends on this team are helping shape who you are becoming. Don’t forget that. Someday you will have the opportunity to give back and when you remember that, you will know your support is doing something worthwhile.”

McMurry University is grateful for generosity of Donald Taylor and what his support will do to help McMurry’s men’s basketball team be successful.
