McMurry University names Dr. R. Max Wynn as 2014 Distinguished Alumnus

In recognition of his many contributions to the field of medicine and his years of service to his alma mater, McMurry University has named Dr. R. Max Wynn ’80 of UT Southwestern Medical Center as its Distinguished Alumnus for 2014. Dr. Wynn will be honored at the Distinguished Alumni Dinner on Thursday, Oct. 9, as part of McMurry’s Homecoming festivities.Wynn

Dr. Wynn is an associate professor in UT Southwestern’s Departments of Internal Medicine and Biochemistry. He has served on the McMurry University Science and Math Advisory Board since 1992.

While at McMurry, Dr. Wynn received the outstanding biology student award. He earned Dean’s List recognition from 1978-80 and was inducted into the biology honor fraternity Beta Beta Beta and the national chemical honor fraternity Gamma Sigma Epsilon.

After graduating from McMurry with a BS in Chemistry and Biology, Dr. Wynn earned his master’s (1983) and doctorate (1986) from Texas Tech University’s Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry. From 1986-1989, Dr. Wynn was a postdoctoral associate at the University of California at Berkeley.

Dr. Wynn is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has received post-doctoral fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Health and The American Heart Association.

Dr. Wynn has served as a reviewer for the Archives of Biochemistry, the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Biochemistry Journal and other scientific journals. He has published numerous scientific papers and presented talks as an invited lecturer at seminars in the United States, Europe and Asia detailing his research.

Dr. Wynn’s community service includes serving as a Stephen Ministry and Stephen Leader at his church, working as a Habitat for Humanity volunteer and participating as a longtime blood donor. He was awarded the Scouting Mentor Award from the Boy Scouts of America.

A native of Morton, Texas, Dr. Wynn married fellow McMurry alumna Sharon Rae Weber ’80 in 1980 in Albuquerque, NM.  They have one daughter, April Nicole Wynn ’04 who is now teaching at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.  April received her PhD in genetics from North Carolina State University in 2013.  Dr. Wynn’s sister Kandi Wynn Gongora ’97 and his brother-in-law Eric Gongora ’98 are also McMurry alumni.
