Abilene, TX

As the first building on McMurry University’s campus, Old Main has been a symbol of McMurry University since its founding in 1923. After almost four years of vacancy, the restoration is complete and Old Main is scheduled for a grand reopening at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 11, 2014, during Homecoming.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be followed by an all alumni photo in front of the historic building. Historical talks and tours of the building will be offered at 10:50 a.m. and 11:25 a.m.

During McMurry’s recent Shaping the Future capital campaign the need to restore this historic building was identified. The restoration process brings Old Main into the 21st century, while keeping the spirit of the building alive. Noted as being the last historic building in Abilene to be restored by the Abilene Preservation League, the McMurry community has seen this prominent landmark come back to life this fall as classes resumed and professors and staff moved back into the building.

The grand reopening will also coincide with McMurry’s JW Hunt Society festivities and inductions during Homecoming. The JW Hunt Society is McMurry’s group of esteemed alumni who graduated 50 or more years ago.
