Dr. James Hunt

After a national search, Dr. James W. Hunt has been named the Vice President for Academic Affairs at McMurry University beginning April 1, 2015.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Hunt to the McMurry University academic community,” said Dr. Sandra S. Harper, president. “He brings outstanding academic and administrative credentials as well as a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. This combination of attributes makes him ideally suited to provide visionary leadership and enhance McMurry’s already distinguished record of faculty research, teaching, and service.”

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to join the McMurry University community at this important time in its history.  I was very impressed with everyone I met and all that I learned about McMurry during my campus visit,” said Dr. Hunt. “It was clear to me that McMurry puts students at the forefront of all that it does and that the faculty and staff are deeply committed to student learning and growth.  I look forward to partnering with President Harper and the faculty and staff at McMurry in actualizing the exciting centennial vision, McMurry Momentum: Grounded in History, Soaring to the Future."

Dr. Hunt previously was provost and Dean of the Faculty at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.  He was responsible for all academic recruitment and promotion, budgeting, class scheduling and registration, and the Paideia Program.  Created through an $8 million grant from the Priddy Charitable Trust, the Paideia Program is an interdisciplinary, integrative, and intentional learning experience that encourages students to make connections among all their learning experiences, both in and out of the classroom, said Dr. Hunt.

He also has been successful in obtaining funding from the Andrew Mellon Foundation to support the Paideia Program, environmental studies and faculty development for “Writing in the Disciplines.” A recent $1.3 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute is being used to enhance the pedagogy in the sciences.

In addition to Dr. Hunt’s administrative and fundraising accomplishments, he has been a professor of education since 1999. He served as a faculty member at Southwestern from 1988 until his appointment as provost and Dean of the Faculty in 2001. He has authored numerous publications, presentations and workshops on teacher education.

Dr. Hunt received his Master’s and Doctor of Education degrees from Northwestern State University of Louisiana. His undergraduate degree in education is from Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri.

Dr. Hunt succeeds Dr. Paul Fabrizio, who will return to his full-time faculty position in the political science department after serving five years as McMurry University’s Vice President for Academic Affairs.
